How do air source heat pumps work?

Air source heat pumps work by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it to the inside of a building for heating purposes. Here’s a simplified explanation of how they work:

Heat Extraction: The air source heat pump absorbs heat from the outdoor air using an outdoor unit, often referred to as the evaporator. Even at low temperatures, there is still heat energy present in the air.
Heat Transfer: The absorbed heat is transferred to a refrigerant, usually a fluid with low boiling point such as R410A or R32, inside the evaporator coils. As the refrigerant evaporates, it transforms into a gas. Compression: The gaseous refrigerant is compressed by a compressor, raising its temperature and pressure. This process increases the energy of the refrigerant.
Heat Release: The hot, high-pressure refrigerant flows into the indoor unit, known as the condenser, where it releases heat to the indoor space. This heat transfer causes the refrigerant to condense back into a liquid state.
Heat Distribution: The condensed liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve or metering device, reducing its pressure and temperature. This prepares the refrigerant to repeat the cycle by entering the evaporator again.
Repeating the Cycle: The refrigerant returns to the evaporator to absorb more heat from the outdoor air, and the cycle continues, continuously extracting heat from the outside and releasing it indoors.

By utilizing the heat energy present in the outdoor air, air source heat pumps can provide efficient heating for buildings. They can also be reversed to provide cooling during warmer months by extracting heat from the indoor air and releasing it outside.

Air source heat pumps are known for their energy efficiency and environmentally friendly operation since they can transfer more heat energy than the electricity they consume. They offer a sustainable heating and cooling solution while reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption compared to traditional heating systems.
